"Prayer in honor of Saint Stephen:
Lord, we celebrate the entrance of Saint Stephen into eternal glory. He died praying for those who killed him. Help us to imitate his goodnedd and to love our enemies. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen"The new Christian Church was growing rapidly, and it was experiencing growing pains. "As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Greek-speaking Christians complained about the Hebrew-speaking Christians, saying that their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, 'It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.' The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen to be one of the seven, for he was a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit..." (Acts 6:1-5)
The Acts of the Apostles says that Stephen was a man filled with grace and power, who worked great wonders among the people. Certain Jews debated with Stephen, but he bested them in argument and wisdom. Out of jealousy, they persuaded others to charge him with blasphemy. He was seized and brought in front of the Sanhedrin. With the face of an angel, Stephen preached to them, and his words stung them to the heart. Filled with fury, they dragged him outside the city and stoned him to death. His last words were, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." Thus died the first Christian martyr. The community of disciples buried Stephen and mourned him, but Stephen's sacrifice was just the start of a mighty crowd of countless witnesses. As one of the second century Church fathers wrote, "The blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church."Feast Day: December 26
